Climate Change in the Rockies

Two-day seminar based out of Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, with an off-site field trip to the Florissant Fossil Quarry. The seminar will include Climate Change 101 and Paleo Climate Change. Speakers will present on Biological Climate Change topics such as birds, grasshoppers, pikas, and alpine tundra. The seminar will include field studies, hands-on activities, and lecture.

Professional Development Opportunity for Colorado Civics and Government Teachers: James Madison Legacy Project

Applications from middle and high school civics and government teachers are now being accepted for the James Madison Legacy Project, a week-long summer professional development program in Constitutional Studies funded by the US Department of Education. The program is open to teachers who who teach in schools with a minimum of 30% of student enrollment eligible for free/reduced lunch and is designed to reduce the civic achievement gap among high needs students.

The program will take place June 6-10 on the Auraria Camus. They are intentionally holding slots for participants from out-lying parts of our state beyond the Denver/Boulder area in an effort to provide meaningful professional development programs for teachers who teach beyond the metro area. This grant will cover housing and a mileage stipend. Applications from within the metro area will also be accepted. Preference will be given to teams from the same school or school district.

Participating teachers will receive a $500 honorarium for fulfilling program requirements, including implementing the culminating activity-- a simulated Congressional hearing-- in their classrooms. Teachers will also receive a free set of WTP textbooks, valued over $600, or they can choose to have free access to the new WTP e-book. Three semester hours of credit in political science are available at an additional cost from Adams State University.

Spring Workshop: China's Millennials and Other Authentic Voices for Teaching about China

Join the University of Colorado Program for Teaching East Asia (TEA) for a one-day workshop on contemporary China on Saturday, April 16, 2016. The workshop will offer a variety of print and visual texts for teaching about China today. The workshop keynote is Eric Fish, journalist, blogger, and author of the highly acclaimed 2015 book, China’s Millennials: The Want Generation. Fish will share his profiles of Chinese youth and discuss how this generation is navigating a fast-changing China and challenging China’s status quo. Other workshop sessions will feature a set of authentic propaganda posters of the late-Mao era recently added to TEA’s lending resource library; TEA’s guide to the best websites and blogs on contemporary China; and contemporary Chinese short stories to enrich social studies and literature classes.  Participants receive breakfast and lunch, a copy of China’s Millennials, a set of short stories, other resources, and certificate for 6 contact hours of professional development. Next Generation Science Website offering Resources for Standards

The NGSS website, www.nextgenscience.org, now has a brand new look and more levels of utility. The revamped website has new features for parents, teachers, school administrators, and other advocates of the NGSS. The site offers a more user-friendly layout, extensive search features for all resources, and additional functionality to access content, including the NGSS appendices and performance expectations. You will also be able to find:


  • Classroom tools for teachers
  • Resources to help administrators support the NGSS in the classroom
  • Evidence Statements and how to use them
  • A robust set of communications resources for various audiences and stakeholders

March 11th Workshop for the Colorado Foundation for Water Education

The Colorado Foundation for Water Education is excited to offer a Climate and Colorado’s Water Future Workshop on March 11—we wanted to make sure the Colorado Science Education Network is aware of the opportunity and considers reaching out to your networks to share the announcement. It’s packed with great speakers, discussion and resources—and a lot of new talks that we haven’t included in previous years. We have 5-10 seats remaining and expect over 50 educators and scientists to attend.

Participants will meet in Boulder to tour INSTAAR's Stable Isotope Lab and hear from regional and world-renowned experts about Colorado's climate—exploring climate science, hydrology, water supply planning and more. We'll learn how the state is preparing for an uncertain water future and come away with tools to better teach, communicate, and take action to conserve water in the face of climate change. GeoCamp Iceland 2016

Explore Iceland for 10 magical days! NCGE's GeoCamp Iceland Institute is a graduate level equivalent short course in geographic inquiry and field methods for in-service teachers. Iceland's extraordinary and unique landscapes serve as the classroom and laboratory. Guided by Icelandic field leaders, participants will learn directly from Iceland's renewable energy experts, sail on a fishing vessel, visit active volcanoes, and walk upon receding glaciers and in rift valleys. Working alongside local teachers, participants have the opportunity to explore historic sites and enjoy Icelandic foods, and much more! Applications must be submitted by March 15, 2016.
