Professional Development Opportunity for Colorado Civics and Government Teachers: James Madison Legacy Project

Applications from middle and high school civics and government teachers are now being accepted for the James Madison Legacy Project, a week-long summer professional development program in Constitutional Studies funded by the US Department of Education. The program is open to teachers who who teach in schools with a minimum of 30% of student enrollment eligible for free/reduced lunch and is designed to reduce the civic achievement gap among high needs students.

The program will take place June 6-10 on the Auraria Camus. They are intentionally holding slots for participants from out-lying parts of our state beyond the Denver/Boulder area in an effort to provide meaningful professional development programs for teachers who teach beyond the metro area. This grant will cover housing and a mileage stipend. Applications from within the metro area will also be accepted. Preference will be given to teams from the same school or school district.

Participating teachers will receive a $500 honorarium for fulfilling program requirements, including implementing the culminating activity-- a simulated Congressional hearing-- in their classrooms. Teachers will also receive a free set of WTP textbooks, valued over $600, or they can choose to have free access to the new WTP e-book. Three semester hours of credit in political science are available at an additional cost from Adams State University.
