Literacy in History / Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects

The Common Core Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science & Technical Subjects http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/RH/introduction address the concepts and skills students need to successfully read and write in the social studies classroom. These standards guide students in understanding primary sources and other social studies texts through specific skills/strategies for reading and writing.  The skills support students' learning of the content and enhance teachers' instruction in the classroom.  National Geographic also has a great page developed to assist with making connections between geography and the English language Common Core.  You can find that page here:

NG Education- Complete Collection of State Tabletop MapMaker Kits

Available March 31, the complete set of the United States Tabletop MapKits will be available on the National Geographic Education website for your use!  (Colorado is already available, click the Colorado Map image to view!)  The U.S. State Tabletop MapMaker Kits maps include state boundaries, interstate highways, rivers, and the top ten most populous cities in each state. Each state map is available as a downloadable tiled PDF that you can print, laminate, and assemble to engage students in group work to learn about their state's geography. The tiled map is a large map that prints out on several 8.5'' by 11'' sheets of paper for easy assemblage and convenient printing. The map is also available as a "poster version" that you can print on a large-format printer.

The National Council for Geographic Education is saddened to announce the death of renowned geography educator and NCGE member Harm de Blij.

Oct 9, 1935 - March 25, 2014

Harm de Blij was a tireless advocate for geography and spent his career as a professor, author, speaker, television personality and public champion of the discipline.  Dr. de Bjij was most recently the John A. Hannah Professor of Geography at Michigan State University.  During the course of his long academic career he also held positions at Marshall University, University of South Florida, Georgetown University, University of Miami, George Washington University, University of Hawaii, University of Colorado and Northwestern University.

Colorado AP Human Geography Teachers Selected to Join Dr. Joseph Stoltman of Western Michigan University for South Korea Tour

Being part of the National Geographic Alliance Network means that COGA is able to share opportunities with Colorado educators from across the country. Congratulations to Unity Hartman of George Washington High School in Denver and Robert Gilliam of William J. Palmer High School in Colorado Springs who will be joining the delegation to South Korea this summer with other AP Human Geography teachers to learn more about this culturally and politically rich country. Teachers participating in this tour will collaborate to bring depth, knowledge, and expertise about South Korea into the content that they teach. They look forward to sharing their adventures with you and with their students upon return.

The Department of Geography & the Environment at the University of Denver is organizing and hosting this year's 6th Annual GIScience in Higher Education Summit - Colorado. The summit will be held on Friday, March 21, 2014 from 8:30am to 3:30pm in the Anderson Academic Commons on the University of Denver campus.
As a member of the GIScience Higher Education Community in Colorado we hope you will take the day to collaborate and mingle with your peers and present your GIS education ideas and best practices.  Join us as we peer into the future of GIScience education.
